In the train dispatcher's view (not in the signal box), the signal backgrounds are grey in some blocks, and white in others.

Weg vom Start zum Ziel
Michael Mertner ergänzt:
Weiße Signalhintergründe stellen im Rahmen einer Zugfahrt dar, ob für diese Zugfahrt ein Weg vom Start zum Ziel existiert. Nimmt man unterwegs irgendwo einen Block und oder eine Weichenstraße aus der Zugfahrt heraus, werden die Signalhintergründe grau.
